When I decided to downsize the amount of furniture in my apartment to help give it a feeling of more space (considering how narrow it is, this is almost an impossible task), I thought that trading in my large kitchen table and 4 chairs for a small desk and printer shelf was a good idea. I ordered a set off Nissen, and it looked so easy to assemble that I could do it in less than 20 minutes.
You can see where this story is going.
I got a rather small box delivered today and found EVERYTHING inside in small pieces. Not only did the desk, chair and printer shelf require two screw drivers to assemble them (one of which I didn't have, but one of my butter knives saved the day), it also required the use of wood glue. This means that once I put them together, I shouldn't ever disassemble them again. Considering that I have vague plans to move next April, this could cause some problems.
Unlike something easy from IKEA that only requires you to snap a few pieces together, the table and shelf had me down on my knees sweating and swearing as I struggled to fit screws into holes too small to accommodate them (no dirty thoughts please). In the end, I was so tired and sweaty and my back was killing me from being bent over so long. I felt that rather than putting in a few screws and glue, that I had assembled the whole thing from scratch (right down to cutting down the bloody trees myself)!
You would think after the last two things I ordered from Nissen (my dresser and bookshelf) that I would know better than to expect an easy solution. In fact, the price itself should have been an indication. Nothing that cheap comes without a hidden price.
Despite my bitching, I'm rather happy with the way it looks and the amount of space it takes when all set up. It looks more expensive than it is, and my desktop has lots of room for my laptop and any books I might be studying with (don't laugh, it could happen).
Now all I have to do is brace myself for my bookshelf which comes in next weekend...
